Kicking Ass and Taking Names

If you follow me on Twitter or we’re friends on Facebook (or *gasp* in real life), you’ve likely heard the news regarding my recent unemployment status. Yes, it’s true. The state of the economy south of the border has impacted my (former) employer, and I’ve been officially downsized. At first I was a little taken aback by the news, but after a couple days of contemplation I’ve come to realize that this may be the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time.

Once you’ve been in the trenches of this (or any other) business for a while, it becomes increasingly difficult to justify working for somebody else. Yes, a steady pay cheque is nice. Yes, security helps us all sleep well at night. But when you spend your days building a profitable company for somebody else, it can become rather disheartening. So in many respects, I am looking at my new found freedom as an opportunity to forge ahead in a direction I could never undertake in the employ of another. This time, everything has changed.

I’ve decided that I do not want another job, and that it’s time for me to go into business for myself. With the skills and knowledge I have gained over the years, there is no reason (aside from my own complacency) that I shouldn’t be a successful entrepreneur. I’m probably looking at some lean times ahead, and there is no doubt that the life of an entrepreneur is fraught with struggle, but I have never been more excited!

I’m going to take on a few clients, and kick much ass on their behalf. I’m going to build some quality sites that I can be truly proud of. And I’ve got a product in the works that has the potential to earn a whole lot of money. On top of that, I’ll probably do some freelance copy writing / blogging / PR stuff to help make ends meet. So stay tuned kids… I’m kicking ass and taking names.
